Brush up on your Prototyping

March 28, 2007 at 1:31 am with 0 comments

Recently I've been trying to reorganize my efforts and pull my clients and coworkers closer during the planning and early design stages of a websites. In doing so, I've decided to hard nose myself into using prototypes (also called wireframes) for every project, not just the big ones. It's easy to think, "this site is so small, why take the time to prototype it — let's just bust it out and move on". What happens more often than not is that we end up with twice as much back-and-forth work and a muddled end result. For those who are uninformed, or have never used prototyping as a method of planning, a prototype is a draft version of a website and is often the best way to gather feedback while planning and designing a website.

Looking for uber-nerds to join my posse

Being a businessman, I have a hard time saying no to work and [more so] to money, however sometimes I just can't make it to the game or I have to leave the table after the first hand — hey, I can't do it all, I'm only ¼ robot... With nearly a dozen projects on my table right now that have back-to-back deployment deadlines, things get a little overwhelming.

Upcoming entries for your entertainment

March 15, 2007 at 2:24 am with 0 comments

I know, I know, I said I was going to post compelling, more intriguing entries on a regular basis, but it really is a hard habit to get into — especially when you've got a newborn, a wife who just had to undergo surgery only five weeks after giving birth, six websites under a retainer contract and four more under independent contract; all that and I still have to go to the bathroom every now and then (I try not to for the sake of writing a blog entry, but it always ends in a mess)... So, since I haven't the time this week to complete one of the six entries I've been writing, I'll just give you a short excerpt or description from each to peak your interest and hopefully draw you back fore more to come.

Visual Basic compiler

March 8, 2007 at 7:15 pm with 0 comments

For those who don't know, on Feb. 20, Novell (sponsor of the infamous Mono project) announced the release of Visual Basic.NET support in Mono! Now, for those who are die-hard advocates of Microsoft, and love to support their efforts toward technology & Internet monopolization, this probably doesn't matter to you at all. But, if you're a developer with eyes wide open, this is...

Want to try Virb.com?

March 6, 2007 at 6:02 pm with 0 comments

For those who haven't heard of it, Virb is a new social networking site (similar to MySpace, but not built around ad space and crappy themes) being developed by Unborn Media — the same people that made PureVolume. I've only had my Virb account for a few days, and even though it's still in beta stages, I can tell you already that it's a lot better than MySpace! I'll try and post...

Linux is cAsE sEnSiTiVe

March 5, 2007 at 3:56 pm with comments off

Did you know that Linux is cAsE sEnSiTiVe? I found this out while using Dispatch to upload a project I was working on. I renamed a local folder within a project to all lowercase from being Capitalized, and when I uploaded a file from that folder again, my Linux server created a new folder with the same name as the old one, just lowercased. This caused some headaches until I found out what was...
